Website Compliancy

There are three main areas that we need to make sure websites are compliant

W3C Guidelines

The W3c (World Wide Web consortium) is an international consortium which develops web standards. The W3C mission is:

To lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long term growth for the web

Spear Trent build websites that are compliant to W3C standards, so you can be sure that time has been taken to make sure that your website has been built properly. Whereas the majority of web developers combine presentation and content, by building to the W3C guidelines we are separating the presentation and content. This results in websites with more meaning as we concentrate on the semantics of the text and also gives us more flexibility in updating the design and content of websites.

Your website may look good, but is it built properly?

Website Accessibility

“The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect.”
Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web

One case set a legal precedent against building inaccessible websites. The Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games were successfully sued for AUS$20,000. The web content accessibility guidelines and the Australian Disability and Discrimination act were used to arrive at the final decision. The person who sued was visually impaired.

The area we are concerned with is Section 21 of the Disability and Discrimination Act 1995 . This is the duty of providers of services to make adjustments. A website is a service.

Privacy

The W3C Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) give users more control over the use of personal information when they visit a website. There are various guidelines that need to followed so that the users requirements on their browser can be matched against the website information and inform the user of the website privacy details. Visually the user would also see a privacy statement similar to the this website.

By conforming to all of the above, your site will be legal, compliant with Internet standard guidelines and improve the user experience of your website. Search engines and directories will see that your website has been built properly and give it preference over those that haven't.
